Isolation Consolation: Psalm 62: Only God!

March 20, 2020 Matthew Recker

As positive cases of the Corona virus and death mounts in NYC, it is easy to feel a loss of security and be overcome with fear. In this life we almost instinctively perceive our security to be in our health, family, friends, or our wealth. What happens when all these things are threatened or even gone in a few moments of time? What are we to do?

When things we have unconsciously trusted are threatened we must consciously seek the Lord and trust Him to quiet our noisy soul. The security we most need is found in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 62 is a powerful Psalm that underscores that ONLY God can provide what we most need for safety in this world. Men in this world are like tottering, wobbly fences compared to God that is a Tower and Fortress of strength. Only God is the theme of these Psalm:

Only God can give … stillness for our soul. “Truly my soul waiteth upon God… my soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him” (Psalm 62:1,5). “Wait” literally means to be silent and still before Him. God can quiet your noisy soul.

Only God can give…salvation to every soul, for it is Christ who died and rose again to give us eternal life. Beating strong within the breast of every man is a desire to live forever. The Gospel is God’s power to salvation; and Jesus will always be the ultimate answer to our ultimate crisis, death itself. All the worries of the world boil down to the fear of death. Christ, who is love, died on the cross for your sins, Christ who is life, rose again, and Christ who is LORD will hear you when you call upon Him to save you.

Salvation is only in Christ, not anyone else and not Christ PLUS anything else. We are saved, not by works, religion, or a church, but Christ alone. To get to heaven we must have all our sins forgiven, and only Christ can do that. To get into heaven we must have perfect righteousness and when we believe in Him, His perfect righteousness is put on our account in full.

And only God can give … strength in our soul, to serve Him. “God hath spoken once: twice have I heard this: power belongeth unto God.”

As you read this Psalm notice the phrases, (v.1) Truly my soul waiteth upon God… (v.2,6) He only is my rock and my salvation… (v.5) wait thou only upon God… (v.6) He only is my rock and my salvation.

In times of desperation, do not trust in sinful and selfish strategies of oppression and robbery and do not trust in riches that perish from the earth. Rather, seek only God. Trust in Him at all times, pour out your heart before Him. God is a refuge for us. When you’re tossed about with waves of worry or confusion, pour out your soul to Him. God alone is our stillness, salvation & strength! Only God is our consolation during this time of isolation!
