Is Christianity Based on Fear?

September 30, 2016 Matthew Recker

There are many attacks against Christianity. A brother in our church sent me a list of such attacks that his co-worker presented to him. This co-worker constantly attacks and mocks his faith, so I thought it might be good to face these attacks head on.

Attack #1: “Christianity is based on fear.”  An answer to this is Jesus Christ delivers us from our fears that bind us. Slavish Fear is the most basic emotion of man. When Adam sinned rebelliously against God, he ran from God in this kind of fear. God in love pursued Adam so that he could be delivered from this sinful fear. We all need to be free from such fear, and Jesus delivers us from unwholesome fear and the ultimate fear of death. Jesus died and rose again so that we can be forgiven and have peace with God. So Christianity is not a religion of fear but it is a faith that delivers us from fear and gives peace. Here are a few verses from Scripture to show that our faith in Christ and His Gospel brings peace and not fear.

Hebrews 2:14,15; Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Romans 8:15; For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

1 John 4:18; There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Psalm 34:4; I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
