Day 5: 40 Days of Fasting & Prayer

Day 5 of our 40 Days of Fasting

Last night our water heater began leaking all over the basement floor.  At 1 am I was on my hands and knees, not praying, but inspecting the broken item that I heavily rely upon for hot water.  Plumbers are here this morning to repair it at the cost of over $1,00.00!  Oh the trials of life, as I am reminded that when we set ourselves to seek God we are still tyrannized by the brokenness of this world.  Nevertheless, we will still set our hearts to seek the Lord who is faithful and true.

Today my heart is drawn to 2 Kings 2 and to pray like Elisha: “I pray thee, let a double portion of thy Spirit be upon me.”

Elijah told Elisha that he was asking a HARD THING, but if he saw Elijah taken up from him, that his request would be granted.

Let’s read 2 Kings 2:11-12a; And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.  And he saw him no more.

What did Elisha have to see and what did he see?  I believe he saw at least three things:

  1. He saw a GREAT SPIRITUAL WARFARE, as chariots and horses speak of war.  There is a war to bring the Word of God to the world around us.
  2. He saw the TRUE STRENGTH of a nation was in its Spirit-filled servants, as he cries out of Elijah, “The chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.”
  3. He saw the REAL HOME for God’s people, for he saw Elijah no more as he was transported to heaven. No doubt this prefigures the rapture of the church and solidifies our sure hope that we also will be brought to our heavenly home. This reminds us also that all men will live forever.

So let’s not be distracted from seeing Jesus today, and let’s keep from being tyrannized by the breaking things all around us that demand our attention.  “Lord God, fill us with Your power as You did with men like Elijah and Elisha of old!  Give us grace to see beyond the breaking things of this world to reach souls here for eternity.  Deliver us from the evil eye that is tyrannized by seeing only what is visible to our physical eyes. May we look unto Jesus and see You our invisible God with eyes of faith.”

Thanks for listening, and thanks for praying.
